Update on Unity Class Curriculum

2/26/2018

I spent a good deal of time trying to convert the Adventure tutorial into a class format. I have decided it was not worth the effort to finish it. The videos do things a certain way and do a good job of explaining what they are doing, but they will give and take away different parts through out the tutorial to make it so you can see what you just did, even before the rest of the pieces are in place.

With that decision, I have put the rest of the tutorials on hold as well. I have several, and if the class finishes all of those, I might let them build anything they want and just act as a consulant to help them figure out how to do what they want to do.

New Saileach Studios Logo

2/26/2018

The previous version of the logo for Saileach Studios was extremely low resolution. This caused a great deal of issues then I tried to enlarge the image. I had played with the idea of designing knot work that was made up of animals. That was taking a long time, and I was not happy with the results. During my recent training in Blender, I came across a technique that I though would help me to recreate the knot work found in the original image. As well as a way to quickly create a modeled Willow tree that could replace the image in the middle.

I now have a clear way forward, and hope to finish the new version of the logo within a month. Images of the original as well for the current versions can be found on the Current Projects page.

Finished working on the 2D UFO game. This is very similar to the Roll A Ball game we started with, but with using 2D physics instead of 3D.

Unity Game Development Class Update

2/8/2018

I just finished the next game for the class. In this game, 2 players can use the same computer to compete by driving tanks around the screen shooting at each other. There are some intermediate sections in this project, such as an Audio Mixer. But the break down should be easy to follow for the class. I cannot wait to see them get this far.

I have started teaching a class to help people learn how to code by building games in Unity. The initial projects are based on the tutorials found on the Unity website.
Project 1: Hello World

Often the first project any coder ever does, this project allows the student to write their first line of code in minutes.

Project 2: Roll A Ball

In this project, we build a game where the player moves a ball around a play area to collect obejcts and score points.

Happy that things are actually moving forward again. I have to admit I have been having to fight a little stress. I get this way when I start a large project, and things are going really well, then i get worried that I will mess it up. The thinking goes like this, it looks good now, if I just leave it this way, I can image what it might be and not worry about messing it up.

This can be an extremely difficult feeling to push through. I am very grateful for all the support and encouragement. Having finished my book has also helped me to refocus to finish this project.

I look forward to being able to post more updates soon.

Keep moving forward.

I realized that even though I posted my current status of the project, I had not defined it. So, I am fixing that with this post. To the left is the reference image that i am using for the Family portrait. In addition, I have never done a digital painting like this before, so i am discovering new techniques all the time.

I have restarted this project multiple times using different approaches. I am extremely hopeful that this approach will work. I am currently making good progress, and look forward to the final result.

Keep watching for updates.

Agile Explained - Released

I wanted to take a quick moment to announce that my book is now available. Over the years, I have noticed that most books that talk about Agile, do so using examples and analogies from software development to show the value. In addition, since they are attempt to cover all aspects of a vast system, the books tend to be rather large. Overall, I came to the conclusion that we were missing something, and decided to act on that conclusion.

I wanted a reference that could be given to company leaders that would be easy to read and given the a high level overview. This overview would allow them to better understand what Agile teams are attempting to do, as well as encourage them to learn more and expand Agile outside of software development and IT. Leaders, like the ones i was targeting, are extremely busy and unlikely to read a four to five hundred page book on all the ins and outs of Agile. With this in mind, I set out on a path I had not expected myself to take. I decided we needed a reference like this, and if one did not exist, I would need to write it.

Agile Explained is a fast and easy to read book that covers the high level values and benefits of Agile. It lays the foundation that can be expanded on, as well as offering suggestions on how to proceed after the book. My hope is that this book will allow for a greater expansion of Agile thinking that will allow more companies fully embrace the culture needed to reap all the benefits.

If you get a chance to read it, I hope you let me know what you think.

Agile Explained is now available on Amazon.
